Good point. This person doesn't even know what the "equals" sign means, but we should listen to her. I'm sure she is good at reading from a teleprompter, but I'm not sure she should be determining what math is taught.

All those ... ( 1 week ago by knkillname)
All those multiplication algorithms are the very same (even the lattice version). They are just applying the very same rules:
•Write the numbers in base 10: e.g. 879 = 8×100 + 7×10 + 9
•Distribute until you have to multiply single digit numbers only: c×(a + b) = c×a + c×b
Different multiplication algorithms are:
•Peasant multiplication
•Karatsuba multiplication
•Schonhage-Strassen multiplication
I think you should learn Peasant version. It is easy to understand.

The problem is you have to learn algorithms that always give you a correct answer before you can do cluster math
I love the lattice ... ( 1 week ago by eclipsedrose)
I love the lattice method. That was a way that I could actually understand multiplication. You are not even considering people who learn differently like the dyscalculic population. NOT EVERYONE LEARNS THE SAME. It is more important to understand the concepts of math than meaningless formulas. Also who cares if it's not the same way parents learned it? If it works for the individual child who cares? All in all BULLSHIT. Offensive and ignorant. I hope you actually read these comments.

As a former special ... ( 1 week ago by TigerlilyFL)
As a former special education teacher, I can see some value to these new methods once the standard algorithms have failed a particular student. However, It is vital to primarily focus on teaching the classic algorithms since that is what the parents know, it is simple, and it works for most kids (as I have seen).
One of these newer approaches would be great to try with a kid who, after repeated tries, does not "get" the standard algorithm. That's my 2 cents!
Thanks for posting!

I have taught Everyday Mathematics for years. You are correct when you say the "program" doesn't give sufficient practice time to master anything. But the important thing to remember is the state sets standards that districts must follow. One such standard in Texas is multiplication mastery. Also, common sense must prevail. The alternate methods are stepping stones to the sometimes confusing "standard" algorithms! Lattice is an excellent 2,000 year-old stepping stone, and it helps kids learn
I was thinking the ... ( 5 days ago by krononomikon)
I was thinking the same thing
wouldn't you think, though, that the first method should be the most efficient, and then other methods taken after in order to help children who are having troubles? or perhaps just using other algorithms or clusters as a starting point to getting children to understand? what'd be awesome is if teachers were like "does anyone understand this?" during class and then work with the kid in front of the class, which would help everyone

Washington state education is so messed up. Not only do we focus education to pass the most ridiculous standardized test, the WASL, but we prepare students with over complicated crap like this!

My teachers use to ask if we understand what they teach us, we say No when we don't. Then they explain more and ask what's the problem and then they explain the problem. I don't live in the US btw ;)

What is with these people who invented that complicated nonsense? Cluster? Partial Products?!
Inefficient, crude, pitifully orchestrated, and TIME WASTING, is all I can say on those methods. No wonder kids grow stupider every day.

I was born in 1989 in Minnesota. I learned the "old way" of multiplication, but the same way of division that she showed. Only after I had learned the first way of multiplying did I ever encounter the other methods (lattice, etc). Props to Ms. McDermott for using her voice and education to speak about something she's passionate about.
As a future math ... ( 2 days ago by ductapejewpirate)
As a future math teacher (the screen name is old...apologies for its classlessness) this really really irks me. I had heard rumors that they were teaching math like this. I cannot emphasize how much I believe calculators have become a crutch for our society! This is SO irksome!
At the third presidential debate it was brought up by the moderators that we spend more per capita per student than any other country yet we're doing worse than a LOT of countries
Maybe this should say something??
Everyday Math is ... ( 1 day ago by kayrom1)
Everyday Math is garbage. My two sons, who are very good at math, have come home with moronic homework such as "Find three things in your home that weigh about what you think this [picture of a book] weighs." My older son is now in seventh grade, and he came home one day last year, and said, "Hey Mom! I finally learned the right way to do multiplication! His SOCIAL STUDIES teacher taught him the basic algorithm.

i see a mathematical pattern of decay in education in Holland, where I live.
Teachers cannot even count 4*3 without a calculator, and there were even suggestions to teach a new way of maths: 3*3 is an estimate of 10 would be correct...
I am glad that I have been properly taught mats and I think it is needed, even with the new techniques like calculators and so on.
Why use a calculator when you can compute it yourselve? Also the Dutch languages are changed to be easier every 3 to 5 years, why?
Oh My God . . . the ... ( 1 day ago by TheBonnieRose)
Oh My God . . . the "cluster" method is so confusing and seems like an enormous waste fo time. I am shocked and horrified that they are actually teaching that as an introduction to learning multiplication. I can see offering this kind of prob. solution a year AFTER mastery of basic algorythums, perhaps to strengthen logic centers in the brain, but, as a method for basic math . . . NO WAY!
What a scam.

I feel her pain, ... ( 7 hours ago by rugaba)
I feel her pain, but unfortunately SHE IS DEAD WRONG. Math achievement has fallen significantly with respect to the rest of the world, and the countries who are dominating our kids are using methods similar to the TERC/Cluster. We must get on board with better math methods. Yes, it will be difficult at first, but more beneficial in the long run. She failed to demonstrate how much easier the TERC method is to use once you become proficient. Multi-digit multiplication becomes second nature.
