A constant fixture for many years in Memphis, Robert Hodges who refers to himself as "Prince Mongo" (later this morphed into King Mongo and later St Mongo) held a significant segment of the Memphis imagination, especially between the mid 70s to the mid 80s. Possibly it was the fact that Mongo never became boring that kept him in the public imagination.
The most prevalent story by far was that Hodges had taken out insurance against the loss of his mental faculties. He then pretended to be insane. The insurance company paid off in the millions, but in order to keep the money Prince Mongo must continue to come across as, at least, eccentric.
The second urban legend is that Hodges' brother is filthy rich and gives him whatever he wants. The idea that Robert Hodges himself may have inherited money has never been explored in my presence and I don't know the answer to that question.

Mongo has been feeding the hungry for at least 20 years. In the summer of 1987 I saw him feed about 40 homeless guys in a Memphis alleyway.

Hi LesbianVampireLover: I love your post! However, I don't agree with you that Mongo has a problem with his neighbors because if that were the case, why wouldn't he just accept their offer of a buy out instead of telling them that the property wasn't for sale at any price? I am very intrigued by your channel name: if it is not too presumptious of me, are you predominantly M or F and are you a vampire yourself? I am fascinated by 'eccentric' people as I am a kindred spirit. RSVP if you can :)

Hi ThemanfromZambodia! I think Mongo is one swell dude. I just wish he would stop wasting his time trying to get voted into local office and just run for president instead. TY for telling me about Mongo feeding the homeless guys, I wonder why more good stories like this aren't broadcast on the nightly news - maybe YOU should start a "good news" channel here on YouTube. The more good news we hear, the less people will think of this planet as a dark and forboding place. Thanks again, Rob

Memphians really should select him as their city Mayor even though he only spends 8 months out of the year in town. They are currently stuck with the absolute worst mayor in the United States. Many 30 something professionals like myself left the social downfall in Memphis caused by Willie Herentons policies. As crazy as it is in Memphis The Mongo stories make many of us homesick!!!

omg mongo is a ledge! i always stalk him on the internet and try to find more info on him! i still remember driving by his house with the toilet in the tree, and about amillion chairs with people in them outside!
