You Belong To Me is credited to three writers: Pee Wee King, Redd Stewart, and Chilton Price. Actually Price wrote most of the song, and gave rights to the other two in exchange for publicity. Pee Wee King and Redd Stewart did rearrange the song because it was written as a war song during World War II and changed the title to "You Belong To Me" along with arranging the music. Price gave them equal credit because of the success of an earlier hit which she had written, "Slow Poke (posted here on bmcneese45a)," which had done so well with a similar arrangement that she felt she could do better by ceding partial credit to King and Stewart, rather than trying to publicize the song herself.

What a great voice! The best version of the song ever. Stafford had a great sense of humor and fun. She and her husband recorded the classic "Jonathan and Darlene" albums. Darlene, an off key singer and Jonathan, a terrible pianist -- hilarious!

This song was on the sound track of the movie "TinMen", It took me a long while to track it down, eventually buying a 5 record set just to get this song (in the 80's). When I played it at home, my dad got quite sentimental. He told me that this was the song he'd requested on the radio for my mum when he was serving in the army in Germany in the 50's. Synchonicity I guess.

Tori Amos of all people cut a great cover of "You Belong To Me" for the soundtrack to the film Mona Lisa Smile. It's done in a period style, and could pass for an original of that era. I don't think it's quite as good as Jo's version, but it's quite beautiful and - maybe - just a bit sadder.

Gorgeous voice. Does anyone have her recording of Poor Wayfaring Stranger? I'd love to hear it. Dusty Springfield sang a live version on one of her early BBC shows and said she originally discovered it on a "gramophone record...sung by Jo Stafford, who was and still is one of my own favourite singers". Dusty always had good taste in music.

As I wrote earlier, this is the later version done by Jo and her Husband Paul Weston, when they moved from Columbia to Capitol in the Late 50's. It's different from the '52 version, as her voice was 8 years older, but I love both; Jo was the " Singer's singer", and her voice was just gorgeous. We love and miss you Jo, but the music and our memories are forever. Wolfsky9
