Awesome song/songwriter. A tribute could not be finer!
I'll never forget reading about the Edmund Fitzgerald in the National Geographic mag. years ago. They found the ship and sent submersibles down there to explore it. Once they did that and pulled up artifacts and were leaving they left a can of budweiser beer in one of the watchman lookouts for Ranson Cundy. He was a watchman for the ship and his daughter said he loved his beer and they left a can can down there for her dad. AWESOME!

I just read your response here three months later. Anyway no matter what is happening, you be brave and take what she gives you. Sometimes she gives you too much. Still-remain brave, bare down and know it isn't required that you like it. No matter what the result... a safe port always awaits you. Remember that.

Sounds like some people here don't know the story of the 'Fitz' She was an iron ore carrier, carrying taconite pellets from NE MN to the lower lakes and the steel mills. She sailed from Superior WI Nov 9 1975 and on the early evening of 10 Nov sunk off White Fish Point MI in a late fall gale and snowstorm that dumped more than two feet of snow across the upper midwest. All 29 crew members were lost. Gordon Lightfoot is a Canadian singer/songwriter from lower Ontario.

When I first heard of the Edmund Fitzgerald
broke my heart to think of the loss of life
aboard that brave ship.
And when I heard Gordon Lightfoot's tribute
song I almost fell down from the shock.
He is a modern day troubador.
This song is a classic for the ages...

It was the year 1992, I've been in La Crosse (WI) when I've heard this song for the first time.
As I'am from Germany, I didn't understand the meaning of this song. My roommate Brain from Chicago told me the whole story!
He's a big Gordan Lightfoot fan!
I'll never forget this night, we've both taken a lot of beer and we've listening to this song serval times. He told told me the whole sad story. A few days later I've been in a car, close to the Lake Erie! Listening this song! Thanks Brian!

I watched a documentary on the Edmond Fitz. Apparently the ship was so long (over 800') that the breaking waves caused the ship to actually "bottom out" causing the Edmund Fitzgerald to 'split' in two, but not completely. Eerie to think about that moment. I could only hope to have even a speck of courage of just ONE of those men. God Bless all the families. Your memory will never be forgotten.
Rest in Peace.
Tony

Absolutely one of the most haunting songs ever. Gordon is one of the greatest troubadours of modern times. Have listen to his music since 1972 and have seen him live in Amsterdam. All people who like his music are in general, nice people. Worldwide.

I am still haunted deep in my soul when I hear this song. What a masterpiece, thank you Gordon Lightfoot. Don't know if family members who lost loved ones on the Edmund Fitzgerald come in here and check out the comments. Either way, God bless the families and rest in peace crew. I still remember November 10, 1975.
