The fact that the opium business has risen and fallen inversely with American military presence is not a point for you. I would put also put greater emphasis on the role of oil (i.e., long term access to sufficient supply) in describing out motivations for war in Iraq. But I am curious about what your sources are for the dollar/euro issue.

Long term sufficient supply is not why the USA invaded Iraq considering that American consumption has not benefited one bit from the war. The USA seized the oil there to prevent any other super power such as China or Russia as examples to take it them selves in the future if the opportunity presented it self.
As for the Petro Dollar, it is known that Saddam was going to sell his oil for Euros in foreign exchanges. This leads ME to speculate. Its my opinion. Not the gospel. Ahmndinijad is also

You are making my point. Seizing control of Iraqi oil before China and Russia can, is one way to ensure "long term sufficient supply." For the most part, however, the US has not (and cannot) "seize" Iraqi oil directly. It can make sweetheart deals with a new US-backed regime, including permission to keep a permanent military presence there to guard the steady flow of oil out of the Gulf. Anyone here in Washington could tell you that was (and still is) the plan.

If you don't realize that America's hegemony (or that of any nation) is entirely dependent on meeting its energy needs, you have a lot to learn about the world economy. May I suggest you read Daniel Yergin's book "The Prize."

One source to check out is Kevin Phillips's book "Bad Money." I don't know about 6Ott7's other points, but Phillips mentions the fact that Saddam threatened to accept only euros for Iraq's oil. Same with Venezuela, and I wonder how that has affected our relationship with its president.
