It will consist of 300 small private artificial islands divided into four categories - private homes, estate homes, dream resorts, and community islands.

Tourism mostly. The place has always been a major trading route but has massively reinvented intself in the last decade. It's become a media centre and has invested in tourism beyond anything else. Which is why it's billed as the most western friendly islamic country. The point of the islands was purely to increase he amount of expensive beach front property by creating 100% more beach front. That's why it's lots of mini islands. Purely monetary.

If you're asking me - no. I lived there for ten months under contract and saw how the foreign workers were treated (mostly Indian and eastern European) if you think racism is bad in the UK or US, you haven't seen anything until you see how workers are treated in the UAE. I saw a few deaths out there that could have been avoided by better work practice, but people were allowed to die because it was cheaper to pay compensation than to stop work and save them. I'm not jealous of that attitude, no.

Dubai, unlike much of the middle east does not have an oil centered economy. Only 6% of their GDP comes from oil. Finance and IT is now the largest industry.
