It is indeed technical. Perhaps too technical for him at this speed. It's more impressive to play a simpler piece of music absolutely immaculately than try to cram in as many beats as possible and mash it up. Don't get me wrong, there are places that are really impressive but they're massively let down by the bits that just aren't clean.

He is using triggers but that doesn't say he needs them. They simply make it easier for the bass drums to cut though, otherwise they can get lost and muffled with the other low end noises. Lots of people say triggers make you play faster, they don't. But if you're feet aren't that fast then they can help a less experienced drummer apparently quicker because they can be made extra sensitive so you don't need to hit the drum as hard. The trigger will always produce the same sound regardless.

no, he definitely IS. this guy really doesn't need any help with his technique- he's excellent. it's just that some people say he doesn't use triggers. what triggers CAN do for people who don't have good technique is turn "feather-taps" on the bass drums into strong, loud hits and make all the strokes sound even- at the same strength, etc. what they do is "clean up" sloppy players and make them sound better. Flo has technique and does fine without triggers, but some insist he doesn't use them.

PS- his primary purpose in using them is triggers also act as a way to make your bass drum(s) cut through a muddy live mix and give the sound definition. all that other stuff I mentioned below is a bonus! :)
