Satyricon was the apex of Surrealism and my favourite film for about 30 years but faded when I realised that the 'point' of it acted against it being a great film. Alienated Man cannot have emotional depth otherwise a lunatic asylum would be a quintessentially 'human' place. In spite of Fellini being incapable of making a boring scene the film loses out on this lack of finer feelings.

I saw this movie when I was like 12. I am 31 now and I was always amazed at how nudity did not appeal to me as a 12 year old boy when I saw this movie. I searched for nudity as a 12 year old boy and Satyricon just removed all sexual aspect. I never liked this movie but it really made me understand art. And although I dont like it, it sure left an impression on my brain. As did the fashion show scene from Roma.

However this is not only Fellini imaginery.This film is more "realistic" than the clean and shiny,old and new "peplum", as the gladiator (I like anyway this film).It's like John Ford and Sergio Leone westerns.I liked this film and THX however for the video.

everything about this film, and this sequence specifically, is masterful and bold. Amazingly unusual sound design. Fantastically fluent, painterly camerawork, art direction and costume design. Lyrical, poetic blocking and editing. And it all comes together as if it were happening live. Such an amazing, under-rated film!

I was 11 as I´ve found a small book in my grandfathers libary. On the front page was a detail of the well known initiation ceremony fresco of a pompeijan villa. It was an edition of the fragments of Petronius' Satyricon. One year later I saw this marvellous film and although the german synchronisation was unbearable, this film ends up in my olymp of unforgettable treasures.
