Video Description:
Richard Strauss: Vier Letzte Lieder / Four Last Songs
Gewandhaus Orchestra, Leipzig, l982
Evening's Glow (Eichendorff)
Through trouble and joy we have
walked hand in hand;
we can rest from our wanderings
now, above the peaceful country-side.
The valleys fall away around us,
the sky is already darkening,
Only a pair of larks still rise
dreamily into the scented air.
Come here, and let them fly
For soon it will be time to sleep
and we must not lose our way
in this solitude.
O broad, contented peace!
So deep in the sunset glow,
How exhausted we are with our
wanderings—
can this then be death?
Im Abendroht (Eichendorff)
Wir sind durch Not und Freude
Gegangen Hand in Hand,
Vom Wandern ruhen wir beide
Nun überm stillen Land.
Rings sich die Täler neigen,
Es dunkelt schon die Luft,
Zwei Lerchen nur noch steigen
Nachträumend in den Duft.
Tritt her und laß sie schwirren,
Bald ist es Schlafenszeit,
Daß wir uns nicht verirren
In dieser Einsamkeit.
O weiter, stiller Friede!
So tief im Abendrot ,
Wie sind wir wandermüde --
Ist das etwa der Tod?
Au crépuscule (Eichendorff)
Nous avons dans la peine et joie
Marché la main dans la main,
De notre errance nosu reposons
A présent sur une terre paisible.
Autour, les vallés s'abbaisent,
L'air s'assombrit déja,
Seules deux alouettes montent
Revant dans la nuit parfumée.
Approche et laisse-les battre des ailes,
Il est bientot temps de dormir;
Que nous ne nous égarions
Dans cette slitude.
O vaste paix sereine,
Si profonde au crépuscule.
Que nous sommes las d'errer -
Serait-ce donc la mort?

Holy cow!! I always thought that Mireille Mathieu's version of "Once upon a time in the west" was the most beautiful thing I'd ever heard but this is sensational. I'm going out tomorrow to get a hold of this album. Any other recommendations for a man just getting into Jessye Norman?

Just like the hours pass smooth and softly, edging towards the end of the day - Time itself will prove that this recording is a glorious landmark of the 20th century. Abendrot - impeccably extended to its full dramatic point of no return.

Supreme artistry. Thank you, maldoror!
Society would be well served to have works like this played in her venues of healing, learning, waiting....

THIS is the DEFINITIVE recording of the four last songs. BRAVA Jessye, as always. When people gush over Schwarzkopf, I wanna hurl! A small , but UGLY voice! Strauss wrote these in mind for Kirsten Flagstad..a BIG, rich soprano sound..VERY similar to Jessye"s sound..Dark, rich creamy. Perfect german, and if she can't move you, you're DEAD!

she did a recording of strauss lieder in the late 80s. she really "gets" strauss. "Kling" is my personal fave!

I agree with all the comments. Not only is this a divine piece of music, something I fell in love with 20 years ago, but Jessye Norman has the perfect voice. I have been a fan of her for many years. Thanks Maldoror26 for posting this

We have gone through sorrow and joy
hand in hand;
now let us rest from our wanderings
above the silent land.
Around us, the valleys bend downwards;
the sky is turning darker;
a solitary pair of larks still soar
with reverie into the fragrant air.
Come close to me and let them fly about;
soon it will be time to sleep;
let us not lose our way
in this solitude.
O vast, tranquil peace!
so deep at sunset.
How weary we are of wandering -
Is this perhaps death?
You're too partisan ... ( 2 months ago by LJBSasha)
You're too partisan in your taste of voice (I've heard FAR worse than Elisabeth Schwarzkopf)!! [While Jessye Norman does an excellent job all right, Schwarzkopf on her recording with Ackermann (?) does no less beautifully.]
What wins me in this recording is the wonderfully slow yet unflagging pace as well as the warm, lovely sound of the Leipzig Gewandhausorchester under Kurt Masur - bravissimi to them (though I wish the solo-horn stood out a little more with the "Tod & Verklärung" motive)!!
Of all the comments ... ( 2 months ago by LJBSasha)
Of all the comments I've so far seen about this entry on YouTube, THIS is the one I like the best of all (and I also know a dear friend of mine, quite a lovely classical singer in her day, who has expressed the same desire for this music to be played/sung when the time for her funeral comes...). How appropriate for music like this in addition to the best JS Bach organ music (among much else!!) to be played at such times and in such locations...

Having now compared some of the other postings of this piece (Scharzkopf, Fleming, Caballé - ALL of which are outstanding and have stuff to offer!!), one thing I've come very much to love of Norman's interpretation - her minimal, virtually NO use, of 'portamento/glissando' (scooping), (something I REALLY appreciate very much!). Yes, I'm glad to recognise her truly-beautiful singing (even if I still think she's a little bit overpowering...) while still liking the accompaniment the best of all!!!
Beautifully sung if ... ( 1 month ago by trinte33)
Beautifully sung if a bit studied and somewhat edgy in some of the brighter tones. I do prefer the matchless Leontyne's version with its great humanity that is all pearls and fused gold in an awesome vocal rendering of the knowledge of life and death.

weird...i miss her portamento for the sweet parts of the music. for the other, the powerful is she as always the best.
To each one's own: ... ( 3 weeks ago by LJBSasha)
To each one's own: one reason why I positively hate all Italian opera (and in fact practically all Italian music after 1643 with the death of Frescobaldi) is its excessive emphasis on the voice coupled with usually-trite melodies (for really meaningful music of a melodic sort, nobody can beat the Russians compared to them, Italians are so shallow!!) and vocal tricks (scooping all over the place). One just doesn't need such tricks, and the fewer of them the better!!! Less CAN be more...
Strauss is ... ( 2 weeks ago by pjdonagh)
Strauss is fortunate indeed to have so many recorded interpretations of this work and most of them superb.
For me the strength of this version lies not alone in the artistry and talent of Miss Norman (immense as that is}hers is just one side of the square with Masur, the Leipzig and the recording engineer completing the whole. The totality of the performance is compelling!!!
